Fashion Blitz — the little black dress

‘Tis the season for LBDs — little black dresses. Just because the cold weather has come around and black has taken over our closets doesn’t mean we should wear it head to toe.

Black dresses are always a safe choice for holiday parties, dates and whatever may come around this season.

However, switch it up and add some color to your dress so you don’t blend into the crowd. Be bold and wear a pair of brightly colored tights. They are the perfect way to get out of the winter blues.

Jewelry is something else that you can use to distract from the black. Use some jewel-toned bracelets or gold earrings. Gold is great with black and stands out more than silver.

You can really make it your own with any colors and accessories you choose.

Karen’s pick

The endless styling possibilities of the little black dress make it the fashion equivalent of a blank canvas, but just because every girl owns one doesn’t mean you can’t stand out from the crowd.

Getting the most out of your LBD is simple and fun when you play up the look with the bold, fashion-forward accessories you already own.

If adventurous, take a cue from the editorial pages of your favorite fashion magazines by topping off the look with a statement-making headwrap. This modern adaptation of the turban, which originally became popularized for women during the 1940s and ‘70s, is a unique way to modernize the traditional styling of a LBD.

Keep the rest minimal with subtle jewelry and a belt that draws attention to the waist and pulls together the colors at play in the headwrap. A simple black bootie serves as the perfect base for a look that is high-fashion inspired with a quirky, lighthearted flair.

Missy’s pick

I love wearing a little black dress when going out or dressing up because the simplicity creates a sexy allure. However, I noticed that I rarely dress down my LBD to be able to wear it in a more casual setting, so for this Blitz piece I sought to create a funky and refreshing take on a more casual LBD.

By adding a shirt underneath a LBD, the dress’ neckline becomes tamed and creates a less formal overall look. The same effect can be achieved by pairing a LBD with a cotton or casual cardigan.

A fun pair of textured or colored tights adds a new flavor to the mix, which are beautifully accented with flat booties to keep it casual.

Minimal jewelry will also keep the LBD looking casual, and a scarf is a great substitute for a necklace or bold earrings, items that tend to dress up an ensemble.
