Just Visiting
Recently, I took a whirlwind road trip to Nashville to visit some family friends who just bought a house there.
I had never been to Nashville before, and after this trip I am dying to go back. All those country song about it were right – the city is filled with cowboy boots, neon lights and live music streaming out of every bar.
Obviously I was mostly concerned about the cowboy boots. I was under the impression that I would fit in Nashville wearing a casual-chic dip-dyed dress and strappy wedges.
Wrong. Cowboy boots were everywhere. Too bad mine only come out of my closet for country concerts at Blossom, and were left out of my luggage.
I always pack too much when I go out of town, but it’s with good reason. For one, I never know what I’ll want to wear that day, and two; I don’t want to look like a tourist. Ever.
I highly discourage acting like a tourist and doing tourist-y things on trips. Looking like and acting like the locals is the best way to experience a city. For example, we skipped the Grand Ole Opry tour and hit the local restaurants and bars in the surrounding neighborhoods. Much more fun and we got a better feel for the city.
So let this be a guide for your next trip out of town. Do your research on what the locals wear and the places they go. Skip the “must-sees” and Ohio apparel and fully indulge in a different culture. You’ll be amazed at what a city holds outside of its tourist attractions.
