The brains behind the business are Hayley Barna and Katia Beauchamp. Both Harvard Business School alumnae, the pair founded Birchbox in 2010 after being inspired by the relationship between Hayley and her best friend, and also Birchbox beauty editor, Mollie Chen. Hayley and Katia set out to help customers discover the best beauty products that work for them by providing assistance in editing the industry. By identifying a need in the online beauty market and combining a love for beauty products with a business background, Birchbox was born.

Box Basics

Birchbox is a subscription service that sends a box of four to five beauty samples once a month to members. For $10 a month, Birchbox customers get to sample high-end beauty products, tailored to their own personal tastes.

When registering for Birchbox, customers fill out a beauty profile identifying characteristics such as individual beauty style and skin type and tone. With this information, Birchbox creates a specialized monthly box that includes samples of skincare products, fragrances, cosmetics and one non-beauty item. Each box comes wrapped and contains a note that explains each product included.

Once you discover the products you love, head to the Birchbox Shop to purchase the full-size options. For each product purchased consumers earn points that can be collected to use on future purchases. Referring friends and reviewing products also earns customers points.

The element of surprise is one of Birchbox’s main points. Every month is something new, and customers never know what’s going to be in their box.  That perfect product may just be on its way right to your door.


To go along with the concept of discovery, Birchbox creates editorial content that will help subscribers learn how to use their products.  The brand creates a magazine, blog and countless videos to help members make the most out of each Birchbox.
