Alex’s Picks: Going Green

Written by Alex. Posted in Accessories, Retailers

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and instead of showcasing last year’s worn out t-shirt, consider celebrating more fashionably! My picks for the color of the month are from all around the web, and are a few pieces I’ve had my eye on! How do you feel about wearing the color green? I love any shade from emerald to mint and everything in between!

1. Emmy Cutout Dress in Green, Nasty Gal
On the very first row under the “clothing” link for Nasty Gal, their silky green dress with sleek cut outs make a perfect tea-time dress! Pairing this dress with spring pastels or a pair of Jefferey Campbells for a nighttime look would be perfect. I’ve just recently ordered a dress from NG, and they have the most delightful customer service and delivery. My dress was shipped from California to Ohio in 3-4 days!

2. Tie-ny Dancer Green Top, Lulu’s
This website is always a fan favorite, and one of my most frequent personal online browsing spots. With tons of new arrivals in green, I stumbled upon this charming blouse with cut out shoulders and embroidered lacy appliques and a tie waist! I picture this top to be appropriate vacation wear if you’re looking to win best dressed on the beach. Have you ever ordered from Lulu’s? If so, how was your experience? I’m looking forward to making a few purchases this spring!

3. Feeling Pine Flat, ModCloth
How adorable is ModCloth? Every time I visit this site (at least 5 times a week) I find the cutest vintage clothing and accessories. Maybe I’m a bit biased, seeing as this e-tailer is based in my hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but I’m never disappointed with ModCloth’s selections. The Feeling Pine Flat especially caught my eye with it’s gold buckle fixture and faux suede. I’ve always loved flats with a “secure ankle” because I can wear them with dresses and shorts, but also with skinny jeans for added character. ModCloth suggests pairing this colored flat with flared skirt or a cap sleeved blouse. Brilliant!

4. Current/Elliott Polka Dot Stiletto Crops, Anthropologie

Having previously worked for this wonderful company in the past, I always revert back to the timeless, bold pieces of Anthropologie! I think this pair of cropped denim is the most perfect green garment to add to your closet. Even though most of the pieces in the new arrivals collection can be a bit pricey, it’s always worth it to make a trip to the store for some feminine finds! What colors would you pair these jeans with? They also come in yellow, which I would pair with more neutral shades and a pop of red if I could.

I hope these pieces inspired you to break free from typical SPD outfits. Everyone will love your touches of green, and wearing them will definitely make you feel festive! As we welcome the warm weather here in Kent, Ohio, I look forward to seeing more color trends on campus. We encourage you to let Fashion Blitz know what you will be wearing this Saturday, whether it be on the beach or at home!

Alex’s picks: Oscar’s Best Dressed

Written by Alex. Posted in Trends

Once a year, the stars align to form one of the most anticipated nights on television. The Academy Awards are an opportunity to judge the best and worst of fashions for the year. As a fashion student, my first focal point is the beautiful gowns, accessories, and shoes.

Of course, the best part of any gown is the date and tuxedo to match! Being a member of the Fashion Blitz team, I had the privilege to tweet latest fashions from the Red Carpet on E! Network.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards were a true testament to young and old design talent. With that being said, there were some bumps along the road. Not many A listers necessarily nailed each look they were going for; Rachel Zoe herself wouldn’t have approved of these looks!

Below are my personal choices for best dressed, and soon enough, we will all tune into the “Fashion Police” episode for the Oscars and hear what they have to say!

Best Dressed Women:
Jessica Chastain (right) in Alexander McQueen

First and foremost, Alexander McQueen is one of my all-time favorite designers!

Ever since Mila Kunis’ McQueen gown at the 2011 SAG Awards, I’ve been hoping for another McQueen gem like this one to hit the red carpet.

Stunning, Jessica! “The Help” star looked absolutely flawless embellished with Harry Winston jewels.

Milla Jovovich (left) in Elie Saab

For Milla Jovovich’s first time at the Oscars, the Resident Evil star channeled old Hollywood glamour in a white, one-shoulder Elie Saab gown, jewelry by Jacob & Co., and an Edie Parker clutch.

Among many actresses discussed on the red carpet, Milla was most loved for her outfit.

Ryan Seacrest even noticed how much Milla loves Elie Saab. For 2012, you can’t go wrong with cream or off-white!

My other favorites: Rooney Mara, Meryl Streep, Emma Stone and Michelle Williams!

Best Dressed Men:
Jean Dujardin (right) in Lanvin

Straying away from the typical hunks of the red carpet, (no offense to Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, etc.) Jean Dujardin looked dapper in his black and white bow tie combination.

Within 2012, Jean took his chances with several different color combinations, and has now resorted to classical B&W. Maybe it’s just me, but I considered Mr. Dujardin to look exceedingly handsome. His accent doesn’t hurt, either!

Jonah Hill (left) in Ermenegildo Zegna

Academy Award nominee for the Best Supporting Actor category for “Moneyball,” Jonah Hill looked absolutely perfect in his navy and black tuxedo.

I especially liked the way he happened to button his blazer, completing the look. I know many people wouldn’t choose Jonah’s look as best dressed, but I think he cleaned up very nicely!

My other favorites: Jason Segel, John Corbett and Gary Oldman!

Marni for H&M Launch

Written by Alex. Posted in Retailers

Backstage at the Spring/Summer 2012 show

Amidst the various fashion weeks taking place in February, a new line for Hennes & Mauritz will soon be placed on the market: Marni!

Chinese model Liu Wen and actress Imogen Poots appear in the Moroccan-themed shots of the line. Since Marni isn’t set to land in all 260 stores (and online) across the globe until March 8, consumers have only been able to preview the Marni pieces online. Can you blame us for being so anxious?

On Feb. 17 in LA, celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, Winona Ryder and Milla Jovovich attended the launch party to ring in Marni at H&M.

At this certain Hollywood residence, the event was hosted by Marni’s Founder and Creative Director, Consuelo Castiglioni, the Director of the Marni at H&M campaign, Sofia Coppola, and Margareta van den Bosch, creative adviser for H&M.

Other famous faces such as Jessica Chastain, Freida Pinto and Andrea Riseborough gathered in their best Marni ensembles to celebrate the designer. At the event, Barrymore expressed her passion for the line, “I love H&M and I love Marni. I love how H&M are bringing the regal, chic clothes of Marni to everyone.”

Fashion Blitz’s invitation must have gotten lost in the mail, but we’re looking forward to the next launch party!

I am eager to see what the “highlight of the Milan Fashion Week” has to bring to H&M, and even more excited for the bold floral and tribal prints that I’ve seen in my research.

What other brands should be brought to H&M, Target and the like? Designers from Lanvin to Versace, Karl Lagerfeld to Jimmy Choo, Matthew Williamson, Stella McCartney, and Comme des Garçons have all designed for H&M in the past.

I’m especially interested in researching new diffusion lines, so if readers want to see more articles like this one, let me know! Eating, breathing and sleeping fashion is just another day in the life. For now, consider this article an official countdown to the launch (11 days!).
