On Saturday night, hundreds of people piled into the Student Center Ballroom to watch Kent State’s annual Rock the Runway show. This year’s talented group of designers catered their collections to the show’s hip-hop theme and displayed their design skills to the judges. Each look that hit the runway was both fun and innovative, and every model looked as if he or she had walked right out of the 1980s and onto the runway. Here are some of the stylists’ favorite looks from the night.

Cassandra’s Pick

Out of all the looks from the Rock the Runway show, I thought that this one (left) from the “Unashamed” collection was particularly fun and went along perfectly with the theme of the show. The oversized top paired with the narrow and tight-fitting skirt made for a cool silhouette. Although pattern mixing can go wrong easily, this look flawlessly pulled together stripes and a geometric pattern. It proved that opposites really do work well together.

This look (middle) from Ariel Pingault’s collection “Heavy Movement” was my top pick from this year’s Rock the Runway. The destroyed hem of the skirt and the silhouette of the crop top were unique, making this look standout on the runway. Always a fan of black and white, I found this look to give off an essential “cool girl” vibe.

Megan’s Pick

This body-con metallic look (right) was a showstopper at Rock the Runway. Diamond Towns, the designer behind the “Vintage Hoarder” collection, was successful in creating a hybrid look inspired by the ‘90s ,while also incorporating key trends from this season like metallic shine and graphic polka-dots.

Senior Designer Spotlight

Written by admin. Posted in Designer

Saturday March 2, Abbey Roos is excited and nervous for the critique of her senior collection Thursday, March 14. Roos will soon find out which designers will make the final cut for the annual fashion show.

How did you become interested in fashion design?

I started sewing at a young age. At first, I began working off commercial patterns. I would see something inspiring, find the closest pattern and make alterations until I eventually started designing my own patterns.

Abbey RoosWhat is the inspiration behind your senior collection?

My inspiration is based on the anatomy of the human body — mostly muscles, curves, lines and symmetry. All of the garments in my collection are meant to be symmetrical. I wanted to represent the skeletal aspect of the human body with bone bustiers underneath sheer layers of fabric, similar to a second skin.

What fabrics did you use in your garments?

I used mostly cotton sateen, georgette and a small amount of denim. My colors are black, red, nude and cobalt blue piping as an accent.

What has been your biggest challenge so far?

My biggest struggle has been mostly working with curve seams. Time has also been my archenemy.

What are your aspirations for after graduation?

I hope to start out working for a large company rather than owning my own business. I see it as an opportunity to learn, grow with a brand and progress within that company.
