Trench Up With Color

Written by admin. Posted in Accessories

With winter on its way, bundle up in style with a fresh trench coat. Trench coats have been peaking this season and are definitely a must have in your wardrobe. High-end brands such as Burberry have been very fond of this creamed colored style for many years, but you can steal one for a fraction of their price at traditional department stores or at a thrift store.

With the winter winds on their way bundling up with a hat, scarf and gloves are essential. The powdered pink Nike beanie is cute and sporty while the purple patterned scarf adds enough glam contrast to the outfit. Beanies are inexpensive and can be bought almost anywhere. Brands such as Neff make cute beanies for girls that keep your ears warm from the chilly winds.

Mixing and matching winter accessories can be fun, and they don’t all have to be one color. Notice how the pink beanie matches the magenta and purple patterned scarf. Also, the black gloves match the lining of my leather bag and black pants. Too many different colors can become a nuisance, but a few colors working together will create a beautifully constructed outfit.

You would be surprised at what high-end brands you can find at thrift stores for just a few dollars! The grey leather pumps match my cream-colored trench coat and patterned sweater. Also, my black leather gloves match with my high-waisted elastic pants, the wording on the beanie and the lining on my leather Coach purse.

Paying attention to details will help you become better at mixing and matching outfits and accessories. Winter weather is often dreary, but your clothes don’t have to be. Adding some color to neutrals will brighten your look. Just because the weather is getting colder doesn’t mean you should let your clothes go through winter depression!

Winter Lux

Written by admin. Posted in Accessories

I have my own timeline of fashion moments, as I like to call them, of when certain garments, colors and accessories can be worn. It’s similar to that of the “no white after Labor Day” rule. One of my favorite fashion moments is winter lux after Veterans Day.

What is winter lux? It is everything over-the-top and ultra glamorous. Furs (faux, of course). Sequins. Embellishments. Jewel tones. Winter whites. It is anything that coincides with the festive holiday season that is fast approaching.

It’s something about dressing the way you feel during the holidays. Christmas has always been my favorite time of year, full of family and friends, dancing the Sugar Plum Fairy variation in ballet class, going downtown to see the lights and decorations. I constantly like to dress for the occasion, even if there is no occasion at all.

There’s no better way get into the holiday spirit than dressing the part. Nothing makes a drab and gray Kent day better like a sequined beret and an oversized coat, both of which are anxiously waiting in my closet.

Fashion Blitz: Thrifting

Megan’s Pick

If you find yourself low on cash but in need of a little retail therapy, head to a local thrift shop, such as the Bomb Shelter, a huge, retro showroom in Akron. If you’re an aspiring ecologist, you may enjoy thrifting as an environmentally conscious way to shop by providing discarded garments with a new life. Thrifting can feel like a lost cause at times so remember to be patient and think creatively while also keeping your personal style in mind.

I fell in love with this midi-length skirt, the inspiration behind my pick this week. The key to thrifting is to find vintage pieces that pair well with items you already own. This unique skirt works great with a chunky sweater, braided black belt, and black leather jacket to make for a very edgy but ethnic look that is easy for anyone to pull off.

Secondhand clothing is one of the best things you can do for the environment and for your wallet. Some vintage clothing can cost a fortune, but the Bomb Shelter offers a variety of gorgeous, handpicked items that are reasonably priced and are in great condition.

I chose a luxurious, midi-velvet cocktail dress and wrapped a mint-colored belt around the waist. I love mixing vintage and modern pieces to create a one-of-a-kind look. Go visit Akron’s hidden gem. You will not be disappointed.

If you’re looking for unique clothes on a budget, plan a trip to the Bomb Shelter in Akron, and get lost the amazing vintage selection. My look this week was inspired by the 90′s, but choosing the houndstooth skirt, a hot trend at the moment, kept the look relevant.

The key to making this outfit work is to be aware of the proportions. The sweater could easily look unflattering over the high-waisted skirt and top that I pinned into a midriff if not for its hip-grazing length. I styled the outfit with opaque tights and classic, black leather shoes for a tailored but quirky vintage ensemble.
