My Trip to Chicago

Written by admin. Posted in Retailers

IMG_5803Over my break I had the opportunity to visit Chicago for three days. A few friends and I took a 7 hour Megabus and got dropped off in the middle of the huge city with no idea what to do. I decided to try my luck at hailing a cab down, and it worked. We headed to our amazing hotel that was right in the heart of the city.

We spent our days eating amazing food, visiting different museums, The Art Institute, The Shedd Aquarium, The Bean, and of course shopping!

In Chicago there is a long strip called the Magnificent Mile. This is pretty much every fashion lovers dream. Every store you can think of is on this strip. We made our way through a two IMG_1528level forever 21, an amazing Zara and even TopShop. I was in heaven. The Macy’s we went into was eight floors (only one floor was mens clothing). Not only were there a ton of stores that I love but there were plenty of options for men as well, such as a three story Nike store, Levis, Ralph Lauren and so many more.

While in Chicago, I started thinking about my future as far as where I would want to live to work and what types of opportunities this city had to offer. For all of you fashion majors, this city would be perfect for you. A lot of people see themselves in New York City working at fashion week, but if you want something a little bit more subtle Chicago is perfect. I really would like to travel back to this amazing city during the summer because they have street festivals that I think would be a blast. For those of you who have never been to Chicago I highly recommend you visit and check out what the windy city has in store for you.

Shopping Local

Written by aoswald. Posted in Retailers, Trends

ChagrinI have worked in a family-owned dancewear boutique since it opened its doors when I was 14. I went from organizing tap shoes and pining for customers to managing its now-booming website that is reaching customers as far as California. I have come to really appreciate and support local businesses after experiencing all the ups and downs of working at an independent store.

There are several reasons to shop local. Exploring the hidden treasures of your community can be an adventure in itself, rather than sauntering down the halls of the closed-off, typical mall. The best way to look unique is to shop in unique places. What is that black bodycon from Forever 21 going to say about your individuality when five other girls at the party have the same dress?

Supporting local businesses also stimulates and strengthens the economic stability of the community, unlike nationally owned chains. These businesses also support community groups, such as youth activities and Greek philanthropies and encourage an overall local prosperity. These are also the businesses that are creating more jobs and offering better customer service.

While downtown Kent has expanded its local fare, I also encourage you to experience other local communities and what they have to offer. Chagrin Falls, Hartville and Medina are all short drives from campus and host a variety of shopping and eating options.

As the warm weather approaches, take advantage of the sunny days by spending it in a new community that you haven’t experienced. You never know what new favorite place you will find.
