The Who, What, Where of Warby Parker

Written by admin. Posted in Retailers

Here at Blitz, we’re always fascinated by emerging companies that are changing the industry as we know it. It’s an added bonus when that company combines style, affordability and philanthropy in a high-quality product.
If you’ve ever left the optometrist ready to get a new pair of glasses, only to suffer from the staggering prices, Warby Parker is for you.

Who

When Neil Blumenthal, Jeffrey Raider, Andrew Hunt and David Gilboa met in graduate school, they all found that they shared the common confusion at the outrageous prices of eyewear. Seeking to find answers to the sky-high price tags, the group analyzed the industry and using the information they found, they set out to develop a company that would redefine eyewear.

What

Warby Parker breaks free from the control of the eyewear industry by evading the industry giants and designer labels and by retailing their own products.

Warby Parker frames are vintage inspired with a chic, modern flair. The selection offers various colors, silhouettes and materials; there is something for every face shape and style preference.

Through avoiding the excessive licensing fees, Warby Parker is able to offer all of their frames for $95 including prescription lenses.

Have perfect vision, but still want to take advantage of the fantastic frames? Opt for the non-prescription sunglasses! (Prescription sunglasses are also available for $150)

If all of this doesn’t have you swearing off those designer labels on the side of your specs for good, for each pair of Warby Parker glasses purchased the company donates a pair to someone in need via nonprofit organizations.

Where

Headquartered in NYC, Warby Parker currently has 13 showrooms across the U.S., including one right here in Ohio.

No showroom close to you? No worries. Warby Parker has an excellent Home Try-On Program where customers can select five frames to have shipped to their home. The customer can take five days to see which pair works for them, trying on the frames with different outfits and getting opinions from friends and family. Once decided, the customer simply ships the frames back and orders their favorite frame online. Now for the best part, the Home Try-On Program is completely free!

If you want a more instantaneous approach, Warby Parker also offers a Virtual Try-On feature on their website, where customers can upload a photo and digitally “try-on” various frames.

Next time you head to get a new pair of specs or sunnies, think twice about how much that little insignia at the side is costing you and look to Warby Parker for stylish, affordable frames!

Brand Spotlight: Patagonia Inc.

Written by admin. Posted in Retailers

I have recently become a huge fan of Patagonia Inc. sportswear. Their clothing features simple designs made with perfect quality. I went on a bit of a Patagonia shopping spree these past few weeks and bought a raincoat, backpack and fleece pullover. I am so satisfied with my purchases, and I want to tell everyone about these durable and cute items!

The Patagonia Torrentshell jacket (left) is waterproof and meant to be layered for warmth. I bought the light balsamic color and am absolutely in love. I have worn it in the rain, and it kept me dry. I can wear warmer clothing underneath and keep dry with this “shell.” Though it was a hefty price of $129, it was worth it for me since I won’t be having to buy another raincoat ever again.

I also purchased a Patagonia Refugio Pack 28L backpack (right). This backpack was much bigger than I expected when I ordered it. It is very spacious and holds all of my books while providing comfort to my back. I bought it for $85 in the light balsamic color (again), though this one has a pink color to it, too.

My third purchase was the Patagonia Synchilla Lightweight Snap-T pullover. The fleece material of this pullover is so soft and warm! I bought it for $99 in the Rubellite Pink color. I can wear this all winter long and stay comfy and warm.

Fashion Blitz: Thrifting

Megan’s Pick

If you find yourself low on cash but in need of a little retail therapy, head to a local thrift shop, such as the Bomb Shelter, a huge, retro showroom in Akron. If you’re an aspiring ecologist, you may enjoy thrifting as an environmentally conscious way to shop by providing discarded garments with a new life. Thrifting can feel like a lost cause at times so remember to be patient and think creatively while also keeping your personal style in mind.

I fell in love with this midi-length skirt, the inspiration behind my pick this week. The key to thrifting is to find vintage pieces that pair well with items you already own. This unique skirt works great with a chunky sweater, braided black belt, and black leather jacket to make for a very edgy but ethnic look that is easy for anyone to pull off.

Julia’s Pick

Secondhand clothing is one of the best things you can do for the environment and for your wallet. Some vintage clothing can cost a fortune, but the Bomb Shelter offers a variety of gorgeous, handpicked items that are reasonably priced and are in great condition.

I chose a luxurious, midi-velvet cocktail dress and wrapped a mint-colored belt around the waist. I love mixing vintage and modern pieces to create a one-of-a-kind look. Go visit Akron’s hidden gem. You will not be disappointed.

If you’re looking for unique clothes on a budget, plan a trip to the Bomb Shelter in Akron, and get lost the amazing vintage selection. My look this week was inspired by the 90′s, but choosing the houndstooth skirt, a hot trend at the moment, kept the look relevant.

The key to making this outfit work is to be aware of the proportions. The sweater could easily look unflattering over the high-waisted skirt and top that I pinned into a midriff if not for its hip-grazing length. I styled the outfit with opaque tights and classic, black leather shoes for a tailored but quirky vintage ensemble.
